Dear Friend: When was the last time you were in Newark? Newark is in the midst of a Revitalization and the Greater Newark Conservancy is part of its rebirth. Since 1987, the Greater Newark Conservancy has been investing in Newark's children and working with residents to turn vacant lots green, one block at a time.
In 1995 we purchased the former Oheb Shalom Synagogue / Metropolitan Baptist Church, saving it from destruction. Built in 1884 and located in the heart of the city, it is being transformed into a hub of activity . . the Urban Environmental and Ecological Center. The building and 1.5 acres of gardens will be filled with our teachers and the general public learning about their environment. We invite you to be part of the transformation. Whether it is fixing the bricks and mortar or greening the grounds, we are blooming. In 1995 we launched a $5.9 million campaign, the funds needed to renovate the interior, exterior and grounds. As we celebrate our success to-date, we have raised over $3 million. Major contributions and financial commitments have been made by the City of Newark and the State of New Jersey, by private foundations, by corporations an individuals, all people able to visualize the future and making it happen. We believe our future lies in making our cities livable. The Greater Newark Conservancy's new Urban Environmental and Ecological Center is an embracing beacon of hope and pride. It brings a new reality to disadvantaged urban residents both young and old . . . the concept of lush, green, productive, beautiful and safe urban spaces. It is a symbol of rejuvenation, a green oasis in an expanse of concrete. It shows that we are taking control of our crumbled communities. We are building and oasis. Join us. Judith
