Web Design and Cultural Taste

How does a web designer successfully create a website for a specific culture, carefully reflecting the aesthetic viewpoint of the selected audience? We faced that challenge when developing this web design for a Real Estate Agent in Texas with a largely Latino clientele. She wanted her website to reflect the cultural heritage of her clients with taste, subtlety, and sophistication.

Our client fell in love with a web design we developed previously for a Real Estate Agency in New Jersey (at bottom of page), and wanted a similar layout. That website was created to appeal to a young urbane professionals working in New York City. Therefore, the colors, images, and themes needed to change to reflect the aesthetic values of Latino clients, while using the same layout. How does a web designer meet that challenge successfully?

cultural web design

First, a web designer must be well rounded, and open to new cultural influences. That is a given. However, there are specific steps we took to insure that our design was faithful to the wishes of our client. First, we asked the client to send us photos, images, links to websites, and any visual reference material she felt reflected the aesthetic viewpoint of her clients. Since our client is also of Latino heritage, she would be our best guide to her client's needs. We also discussed color choices, and other factors that would affect the design. This allowed us to do quick research within the budget for this project.

We distilled all that information and created a web design that meet our clients needs. It subtlety and skillfully reflects the aesthetic viewpoint of her audience. Look at the two designs on this page. Both have the same layout, yet appeal to very different audiences. The ability to design successfully for varied cultures can help a web designer meet the needs of a wider range of businesses and cultures.
