Design Text Heavy Pages
I think that most web designers cringe when asked to design a main page for a web site that must include large amounts of text. Generally, it is easier to create a dramatic visual statement with minimal text and maximum graphics. However, good design can be achieved when clients require text-heavy pages. This home-page design, developed by us for a not-for-profit FOUNDATION, required the use of generous amounts of text. However, the design still needed to be sophisticated, reflecting the artistic values of the client. Here are three things that helped us to accomplish a smart and pleasing text-heavy design.
1. Simplicity. It is best to avoid over-designing a text heavy page. Clean uncluttered lines and the careful use of white space is vital. Remove any items from the page that don't need to be there. Keep it clean. 2. Generous text margins. When margins between columns of text are too slim, it creates the perception of clutter. Use generous margins. 3. Use background color to avoid monotony. We used blocks of background color to separate blocks of text by subject matter. The background color also becomes a design element that adds visual interest and structure to the page. The colors are carefully coordinated to fit in with the overall color scheme. Hopefully, you will find these three tips of use in meeting the challenge of well-designed text rich pages! |
